My Favourite Games #2

Synopsis: “Ethan Winters finds out his wife Mia has gone missing somewhere in Louisiana. Unknown to Ethan: Mia’s being held captive by The Baker Family, a Southern family seemingly deranged and openly hostile to the outside world, except for their daughter Zoe, who may yet help Ethan out of this mysterious nightmare he’s gotten himself into. In a race against time and The Bakers, Ethan will do whatever it takes to save Mia from her captors and get out of Louisiana alive, or die trying.”

A lot of people may not agree with me but this is the best Resident Evil game. First person horror games are way scarier and the vibes are immaculate. There isn’t any cheesy dialogue, we all remember “you were almost a Jill sandwich” and “every resident in this house is evil”. There’s not really a comedic relief in this game, but I actually like that about it. The immersion is insane and I couldn’t begin to imagine how crazy this game must be in VR.

The atmosphere of Resident Evil 7 is what makes it such an incredible game. Having the game set in an isolated environment that’s fairly small really builds the tension. Even the sections where you are outside make you feel like you can’t escape. The development team did an incredible job of creating the environments.

Which brings me to my next point of the graphics. This game still holds up very well. I know it’s not super old, but video game graphics are constantly getting better so to say a game from 2017 still looks good, is pretty impressive. This game sits just on the right side of lifelike where it looks like real people but the designs still have some personality to them. Which is super interesting when it comes to some of the later parts. I’d highly recommend avoiding this game if you’re not a fan of body horror.

The acting is also incredible. Katie O’Hagan who plays Mia is phenomenal. There’s a part near the beginning where she says just the word ‘go’ but it’s so visceral it’s crazy. She said in an interview that she legit surprised some of the crew when filming that because they didn’t expect it. I love mocapped games, the acting feels so much more real.

I’m not going to comment too much on the story as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone that hasn’t played or seen this game before, but it’s one of the more interesting plots of the franchise. It doesn’t have zombies like a lot of the other games, but it’s still the same concept. Survival horror. I actually really like the enemies of this game, even though the zombies in Resident Evil are iconic.

The last area to really comment on is the soundtrack. This isn’t the type of game where you are constantly aware there’s music playing because the gameplay is so intense. However, I really like the soundtrack. It’s a great one to put on if you’re reading a horror or thriller book. Maybe don’t listen to it in the dark though, it’s super creepy (in a good way).

Talking about this game has made me so excited for the next Resident Evil release. I don’t think it’s had an official announcement yet but rumours of it have been floating around for quite some time now. I really hope they’re true and we get wendigos in Resident Evil, that would be so cool.
