Organising My Goodreads #25

The Daemoniac by Kat Ross

We’re still in the trenches of free Kindle books I bought six years ago and honestly, I don’t remember 90% of them. This one I do, purely because it has an interesting name. Please don’t ask me to say this out loud though, it will be embarrassing for everyone involved. I think I know how to say it but we all know it won’t come out how I hope.

Anyway, this has a high average rating on Goodreads (4.01 at the time of writing this post) and over 1000 ratings, so that’s pretty good if you ask me. I still don’t think I’ll be checking this out any time soon though. I won’t delete it from my Kindle but I do think it needs to be removed from my Goodreads. My ‘to read’ shelf is such a mess if you couldn’t tell by the fact that this is post 25 in this series.

Verdict: remove

Synopsis: It’s August 1888, just three weeks before Jack the Ripper will terrorize Whitechapel, and another murderer is stalking the streets of New York. His handiwork bears the hallmarks of a demonic possession—but amateur sleuth Harrison Fearing Pell is certain her quarry is a man of flesh and blood. And she hopes to make her reputation by solving the bizarre case before the man the press has dubbed Mr. Hyde strikes again.

From the squalor of the Five Points to the high-class gambling dens of the Tenderloin and the glittering mansions of Fifth Avenue, Harry follows the trail of a remorseless killer, uncovering a few embarrassing secrets of New York’s richest High Society families along the way. Are the murders a case of black magic—or simple blackmail? And will the trail lead closer to home than she ever imagined?

Relentless by Karen Lynch

This book has a seriously high average rating of 4.28 from over 27,000 reviews. That’s actually crazy. I’ve literally never heard of this book before, but it’s definitely one of the free ones as I can see the other books around it are also the freebies.

Do I need to consider checking this out? I’m not massively swayed by reviews but my interest is piqued. Especially as this is a paranormal fantasy from 2013 so it’s either brilliant or the most cringe-worthy book I’ll ever read.

Is it bad to say that this being less than 300 pages long is making me want to read it? I’ve tried to not rely on shorter reads as much this year but I’m currently making my way through festive ARCs so I need shorter books to make sure I have content to post. I’ll think about it.

Verdict: undecided

Synopsis: Sara Grey’s world shattered ten years ago when her father was brutally murdered. Now at seventeen, she is still haunted by memories of that day, and driven by the need to understand why it happened. She lives a life full of secrets, and her family and friends have no idea of the supernatural world she is immersed in or of Sara’s very powerful gift.

In her quest for answers about her father’s death, Sara takes risks that expose her and her friends to danger, and puts herself into the sights of a sadistic vampire. On the same fateful night she meets Nikolas, a warrior who turns Sara’s world upside down, and who is determined to protect her even if it’s the last thing she wants.

Sara’s life starts to spin out of control as she is hunted by an obsessed vampire, learns that her friends have secrets of their own, and reels from the truth about her own ancestry. Sara has always been fiercely independent, but in order to survive now she must open herself to others, to reveal her deepest secrets. And she must learn to trust the one person capable of breaking down the walls around her.

Eve by Patti Larsen

Now this genuinely interests me. I loved a book about angels when I was a teen and as an adult one of my favourite series is about Death (Belladonna). So I’d be interested to see if this is good. Plus, it has some pretty shining reviews. Not much more to say, I’ll keep this for now.

Verdict: keep

Synopsis: What if Death fell in love with Life and they had a daughter…?

Her unique parentage ensures Eve isn’t like her angel siblings. She brings Death at the beginning of Life and Life to those meant to die. Her continuing failures create constant disaster for her parents and the mortals she tries so hard to serve. But when Eve accidentally interferes with the Loom of Creation, she sets off a chain of events that leads her to finally understand who she really is.
