Best character

Seeing Sabrina finally tapping into her full powers is incredible to see. I love the moment when she’s arguing with Ambrose and she slams to door with her magic and the wind starts howling. He looks genuinely terrified and rightly so, he’s a bit of a misogynistic pig in this episode.

Best supporting character

Big love for Theo in this episode, it was super brave of him to be open about who he is and I love it. He really starts to grow from this point onwards and I’m so glad he’s more comfortable now.

Favourite scenes

The opening scene is completely iconic, I love the homage to the original series.

The three challenges were almost great scenes but unfortunately, I couldn’t clips of them anywhere. The last one in particular when Nick and Sabrina work together to prove Father Blackwood has been sending demons after Sabrina is so good. Sadly, it was not Father Blackwood’s fault, but imagine if it was, most of the terrible things that happen in this show wouldn’t happen.

Best quotes and one liners

ZELDA: And since when do you wear black? Trying to be edgy, are you?

SABRINA: But unless he specifically hand-picked Nick, I’d like the opportunity to contribute to the Academy in a meaningful way.

FATHER BLACKWOOD: By disrupting the first morning assembly you attend?

SABRINA: By ensuring that all students, regardless of gender, feel they have a voice.

NICK: I nominate Sabrina Spellman.

PRUDENCE: Seconded.

NICK: I don’t mind a little competition. Especially not when it’s so damn cute.

FATHER BLACKWOOD: I thought you didn’t have adequate time to prepare, Miss Spellman. SABRINA: Hm. I guess I’m more of a sponge for knowledge than I originally thought.

SABRINA: When I signed the Book of the Beast, the Dark Lord said he would call on me to do his dark bidding and that I wouldn’t be able to refuse him. That might be in a week, or a month, or ten years, but it will happen. And I don’t want to be anywhere near my mortal friends when it does. I don’t want them hurt, and I don’t want them to see me that way.

NICK: Okay, admittedly, I’m not above playing dirty. But not against you. I certainly wouldn’t put you in any danger.

Best musical moment

I feel like whenever I reach a new season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina I have to include the opening credits here. They are 100% one of my favourites ever, I love the music and the art style. It’s just the right amount of creepy.

Final thoughts and fun facts

I’m so excited to get cracking with season two. This is the first time I’ve gotten to a second season in these reviews and I’m having so much fun with them.

The opening scene shows Sabrina changing outfits in front of a mirror, using her magic. This is a direct homage to the opening credits of the original show Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I remember spotting this the first time around and it makes me so happy. I loved the unique openings for Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I wish shows still did stuff like this.

When Father Blackwood introduces Aunt Zelda to the faculty members, all of their names are references to famous American writers of the turn of the XX century, known for their supernatural and cosmic horror works. So, the teachers are Brother Machen (Arthur Machen, author of “The Terror” and “The House of Souls”), Brother Lovecraft (H.P. Lovecraft, of the Cthulhu Mythos), Brother Bierce (Ambrose Bierce, famous for “The Devils Dictionary” and “An Inhabitant of Carcossa) and Sister Jackson (Shirley Jackson, “The Haunting of Hill House, among others). Blackwood himself is a reference to Algernon Blackwood, whose short tale “The Willows” is considered the forerunner of cosmic horror. The last teacher, Sister Carswell, is a reference to Carswell Prison, whose medical facility has a reputation for being haunted. The themes of these authors are constantly referenced throughout the second season.

I adore the development of Nick and Sabrina’s relationship in this episode. At the time I was still a little sad about her and Harvey, but once Nick started showing up more, I didn’t care at all. He’s so open about caring for Sabrina and he isn’t afraid of her darker side, which is exactly what she needs. Nicholas Scratch you will always be famous.
