Re-Watch Review: Dash & Lily EP1

Episode synopsis

Episode one: Dash – When Dash finds an unmarked, red notebook in his favourite bookshop, he must follow a series of clues to figure out who the mysterious writer might be.

Patrick Vaill…Mark

William Hill…Santa Claus

Leah Kreitz…Aryn

Best character

I think Boomer is my favourite character of the entire show so don’t be surprised if his name keeps popping up. There isn’t a very big cast and there are only eight episodes so there’s likely to be a few repeats.

Favourite scenes

Sadly, there isn’t a video clip of the first ‘dare’. I love the moment when Dash discovers the diary.

Best quotes and one liners

LILY: Do you dare? I’ve left some clues for you. If you want them, turn the page. If you don’t,

put the book back on the shelf. [Dash takes it] So, you’ve chosen to play. A revealing choice.

Shall we begin? A coded message. You can decipher it with the right books. But only if you can find them. Your first clue requires some heavy reading. Look for French pianism.

DASH: What the hell is French pianism? [takes out phone]

LILY: Oh, and if you need to use your phone, don’t bother playing.

DASH: I’m not going to Sweden. I’m just trying to avoid seeing anyone over the break.

BOOMER: What, even me?

DASH: No, man. Need you for the pizza.

DASH: You don’t recognize this handwriting, do you?

BOOMER: Yeah. Oh, yeah, that’s a girl. Yeah, that’s definitely girl cursive right there.

DASH: Okay, but that’s not Priya’s, right?

BOOMER: Pretty sure Priya only writes on her phone. Why?

DASH: Oh, I’m just ruling out suspects. Uh, ’cause it had these clues, like a treasure hunt, and I’ve just been wondering about the girl who wrote it.

BOOMER: Ooh, you like her.

DASH: Boomer, we’re not in third grade. We don’t say, Ooh, you like her.

BOOMER: But you do.

DASH: No, I don’t even know her.

BOOMER: Which is why it’s even weirder that you like her. I mean, I haven’t heard you talk about a girl since…

DASH: Yep, you can say her name, Boomer. She’s not Voldemort.

BOOMER: Actually, you’re supposed to say Voldemort’s name. It takes away his power.

BOOMER: All right, guys, we got our holiday special. We call it the St. Nick. It’s in honour of Nicolas Cage.

Final thoughts and fun facts

I actually really enjoyed this show and I’m so sad that it didn’t get another season. I never read the books so I don’t know how much more content there is, but Christmas-themed TV series are so rare.

As Dash tells how he arranged to be all by himself for Christmas, the scene is similar to Home Alone: he’s eating a pizza, watching a black and white film, and wearing one of the same sweaters also worn by Macaulay Culkin’s character Kevin McCallister.
