Episode synopsis
S1 EP23 – Backslide: When Jess and Nick run into their exes Paul and Caroline, the gang fears they both may “backslide” into romantic relationships. Meanwhile, Schmidt desperately tries not to get aroused as he deals with a delicate medical issue, Winston suffers the consequences of a wild night out with his boss and Cece brings Schmidt to a nursing home to meet her grandmother.

Best character
Schmidt has far too many funny moments to not award him best character of the episode. His constant jokes about Winston’s earring is too good and there were a few cute moments between him and Cece.

Best quotes and one liners
WINSTON: Hey, Jess. What’s this song called?
JESS: “The River.” Do you like it?
WINSTON: Yeah, yeah, I liked the way you played it for the first time at 10:00 last night. I liked it a little bit less at 2:00 a.m. And now I’m kind of hoping that the sun comes up, thaws that river and that woman drowns.
JESS: I need to call Russell to just tell him I left my pajamas there.
SCHMIDT: The fact that you were wearing pajamas in the presence of your lover tells me that that relationship was doomed from the start. No way.
SCHMIDT: Old people freak me out. With their hands and their legs. Just, they’re like the human version of pleated pants.
WINSTON: You know, traditionally, the male of the species is more glamorous.
SCHMIDT: When’s it coming out, by the way?
WINSTON: The earring?
SCHMIDT: No, no, the smooth jazz album you’re dropping.
SCHMIDT: You backslid all the way down the hill and back into the parking lot. Take off your skis and wait for your family in the lodge, Jessica Day.
JESS: Stop crying! You are literally the ugliest crier I have ever seen! You cry smile.
NICK: [reading his poem about Caroline] Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? No, a summer’s day is not a bitch.
Final thoughts and fun facts
Jess wonders to herself if she is secretly a cylon. This is a reference to Battlestar Galactica where robots can look exactly like humans, five characters of which have no idea they are robots living among humans.
Paul says “I messed up big time” to Jess. Earlier in the season Jess pretends she made a play called “Big Time” to cover up her being heard by everyone talking to Nick saying “I wanna sleep with him (Paul) big time!”
