The Best Of: Comfort Films and TV Shows #13

Gavin & Stacey

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen this show. So many that I can pretty much quote every episode word for word. It’s just peak British humour and there won’t ever be anything like it again.

The Christmas special in particular (the original not the new one) is a real comfort watch for me. It’s 100% the episode I’ve seen the most times and even though it’s full of drama, it brings me so much comfort. Possibly because I’m a big fan of Christmas specials and films. However, I also love it because it has a behind the scenes special and I love finding out how they film TV shows.

I think I’ve watched the newer Christmas special twice. Not that I didn’t like it, it was good, but the vibes were slightly off. I think I just really hated Sonia, you can’t bring someone new into a group that’s been the same for over 15 years. The very last episode though, was almost perfect. They gave Sonia way too much screen time but the ending was exactly what I wanted. I’m actually quite happy that they won’t be making any more episodes, you really don’t want to keep dragging it out.

I was definitely too young to watch Gavin and Stacey when I first did but my mom would let us watch things with older age ratings as long as she’d watched it before us and said it was fine. I was out here watching Gossip Girl at 11. Anyway, the episode that stuck with me the most, and the one I remembered the most as kid, was the last episode of season three. For some reason the main thing I remembered about the entire show was them sitting on the wall at Barry beach, which I have been to.

I really got into Gavin and Stacey again when I got to university. I’d watched random episodes whenever they were on growing up. But I took my mom’s boxset of the series to uni and it become a real comfort watch for me. I used to watch it a lot with my mom and also a friend from school so it was like having a piece of home with me. Sadly, I’m not friends with that person anymore, nothing bad happened I just went to a different college and then moved five hours away for uni, so we drifted apart. It’s nice to think back on those memories whenever I watch this though.

Cut to going to uni and I made a really great friend through loving this show. We sat and watched the majority of the boxset when she stayed with me for a few days and even went to a Gavin and Stacey pub quiz (we came second because the winners cheated by using Shazam for the music round). Trust me when I say, no one can quote this show or remember the smallest things about it like me.

Honestly, I absolutely adore this series and I’m definitely due a rewatch very soon. Every time I write one of these posts I get the urge to watch what I’m talking about.

Synopsis: Gavin and Stacey have been continuing their romance online and on the telephone for the last six months. Now they want to be together but will their friends and family let them?
