The Best Of: Debuts #7

All of my energy has been focused on getting books read and reviewed at least a month in advance recently. Which means posts like this have fallen to the wayside big time. My puppy also had surgery recently (he’s doing ok) which means I’m pretty much exhausted 24/7 at the moment. So apologies for such a short post!

Accidental Magic by Iris Beaglehole

I’ve currently got a bit of a love hate relationship with this series but I really did enjoy the first few books. The Gilmore Girl vibes are strong, especially in the first book, but you get the added fun of magic in the mix.

Also like Gilmore Girls, this book has weird townies. You have everyone’s favourite weird townie, Kirk (or Ferg as he’s known in this book) and it’s just brilliant. Books set in small towns have a very special place in my heart.

Synopsis: Welcome to Myrtlewood, a quirky town, steeped in magic, tea and mystery…

Life’s a struggle for Rosemary Thorn and her teen daughter, Athena. But their regular troubles are turned upside down after Granny Thorn’s mysterious death.

Despite her cousin’s sinister manoeuvrings, Rosemary returns to Myrtlewood and the sprawling, dilapidated Thorn Manor. But there’s more to the old house than meets the eye, as Rosemary and Athena soon find out — in a whirlwind of magic, adventure, mystical creatures and endless cups of tea.

Life in Myrtlewood would be bliss if Rosemary could only clear her name in a certain murder investigation, solve the mystery and stay out of mortal peril – for at least a little while!

A small town with endless secrets, strange activities and a house with a mind of its own.

Too Scared to Sleep by Andrew Duplessie

I’m not usually a big fan of anthologies but there were some really cool stories in this one. I think short stories work best if they’re horror. They give you just enough time to get creeped out before suddenly you’re at the end. The pacing was slightly off though, but I think the author’s talent for writing horror more than makes up for it.

Synopsis: A garbage disposal that feeds on flesh . . .

A beloved stuffed rabbit that cooks up your parents . . .

Roses that require human blood to bloom . . .

From blood-chilling horror to supernatural scares, this collection of short stories from debut author Andrew Duplessie offers something to stoke anyone’s fear factor. But that’s only the beginning. In a first-ever twist, each story also comes with a pulse-pounding video that deepens the horror. Point your phone at the QR code and be prepared to scream! Maybe even share it with your friends, if you dare.

Ready or not, Too Scared to Sleep will answer the question: How brave are you, really?
