Today’s post features two books that I didn’t actually read through Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading, so I’m cheating slightly. I have read them though, just through other means.
I need to have a really good peruse through the books available on these services right now, both to find new reads and to discover old ones. If you have any recommendations, please let me know.
The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) by Holly Black
Ok, so I’m slightly cheating as I didn’t read this through Kindle Unlimited or Prime reading, but I do know it’s available on there right now. I don’t know if every book on Prime reading is also on Kindle Unlimited, I don’t use the service currently and it won’t let me look at Kindle Unlimited books without a subscription. However, if you haven’t read this series yet, you absolutely need to. It’s one of the top series that I wish I could have erased from my brain so I can read it again for the first time.
I know this is the second book so it’s weird to mention the series this way, but if you want to start the series by buying the first book, at least you can read the second one for free(ish). When I did the first draft of this post, the whole series was available but apparently, they’re removing books from the service a lot more often these days. The whole series is potentially available again, but I’m writing this post months in advance, so I’m not sure.
Synopsis: You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.
The first lesson is to make yourself strong.
After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.
When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.
Chef’s Kiss by Jarett Melendez
This is, surprisingly, my first graphic novel mention. When I first started this series in 2020 (yikes) I wasn’t much of a graphic novel reader, but now I read multiple a month.
I was kindly given an ARC of Chef’s Kiss so I didn’t read it through the service, but I do know it’s currently on Kindle Unlimited.
This is a very sweet LGBTQIA+ graphic novel that centres around a university graduate deciding what to do with his life. He studied journalism but also has a passion for cooking, so when he sees an advert for a chef’s position, he’s interested.
Over the course of the story, he has to complete cooking challenges which are judged by a pig. Yes, I am serious. There’s a very cute pig and I love him.
I seriously recommend this graphic novel if you are looking for a cute, fluffy and quick read. You won’t be disappointed.
Graphic Novel ARC Review: Chef’s Kiss by Jarrett Melendez
Synopsis: Watch things start to really heat up in the kitchen in this sweet, queer, new adult graphic novel!
Now that college is over, English graduate Ben Cook is on the job hunt looking for something…anything…related to his passion for reading and writing. But interview after interview, hiring committee after hiring committee, Ben soon learns getting the dream job won’t be as easy as he thought. Proofreading? Journalism? Copywriting? Not enough experience. It turns out he doesn’t even have enough experience to be a garbage collector! But when Ben stumbles upon a “Now Hiring—No Experience Necessary” sign outside a restaurant, he jumps at the chance to land his first job. Plus, he can keep looking for a writing job in the meantime. He’s actually not so bad in the kitchen, but he will have to pass a series of cooking tests to prove he’s got the culinary skills to stay on full-time. But it’s only temporary…right?
When Ben begins developing a crush on Liam, one of the other super dreamy chefs at the restaurant, and when he starts ditching his old college friends and his old writing job plans, his career path starts to become much less clear.
