Book Review: Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella

Synopsis:

Audrey can’t leave the house. she can’t even take off her dark glasses inside the house.

Then her brother’s friend Linus stumbles into her life. With his friendly, orange-slice smile and his funny notes, he starts to entice Audrey out again – well, Starbucks is a start.

And with Linus at her side, Audrey feels like she can do the things she’d thought were too scary. Suddenly, finding her way back to the real world seems achievable.

Be prepared to laugh, dream and hope with Audrey as she learns that even when you feel like you have lost yourself, love can still find you . . .

Review:

Finding Audrey was my first book from Sophie Kinsella and while it wasn’t quite what I was expecting, it was still quite enjoyable. I think I mostly liked that it was so short, I’m really struggling with long books at the moment. Which I think is because I post on here every day so I need to make sure I have enough time to get enough content written.

Anyway, back to the book. Honestly, my biggest issue with Finding Audrey was how Audrey being interested in a boy/getting a boyfriend was used as a way to make her mental illness better. I personally think this is quite a harmful way of doing this. Getting a partner is not going to solve your issues and it should not have been the case here. I don’t think Audrey should/would have progressed this fast just because she liked a boy.

Now, I understand that he pushed her to get out of her comfort zone, but sometimes this wasn’t done very nicely. I actually really didn’t like Linus. He didn’t seem genuine to me and he gave me all round bad vibes.

I did like Audrey’s narrative. I’m a fan of first-person books where it feels like the character is talking directly to you. Audrey would often break the fourth wall and it made the story feel more personal.

Finding Audrey had real toxic parent-child relationships. I understand thinking your child is playing video games too much, but to completely lose it and throw their computer out of a window, that’s too far. I feel like this storyline was mentioned way too often and it was way too serious for my liking.

Finding Audrey was quite an interesting read, but I think the reason why I liked it so much was because of how short it was. The length was just right and I think if they tried to push it past 300 pages it would have been far too long.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
