ARC Review: Jake Spooky And the Wolves Within Him by Michael Grover

*I was given an ARC of Jake Spooky And the Wolves Within Him. Thank you to Astra Publishing House and Michael Grover for my copy of this graphic novel*

Synopsis:

Jake Spooky keeps puking up wolves…

…and he has no idea why.

Meet Jake Spooky. He’s a shy, punk-rockin’ ghost who has some strange and mysterious powers bubbling just below the surface. Things can get a little bit…WEIRD in Jake’s world. Luckily, his roommates, the TV-headed Brand-o and Quincy the cat, help keep things under control—most of the time. One day, as a massive hurricane approaches, Jake can’t seem to stop puking up wolves, and their landlord has had enough! If any more wolves show up, the three friends are going to get kicked out of their house.

Jake just wants to chill out and have band practice. But first, he will need to look inside himself and unravel the mystery of the wolves within.

Review:

Jake Spooky And the Wolves Within Him is just the right side of weird. I went into this graphic novel with no expectations and honestly, it’s the best way to do so. You’ll either be pleasantly entertained or think “what the hell am I reading?”. My reaction was a little bit of both, but in a good way.

This story is very short, but cute. I wouldn’t get too bogged down trying to understand exactly what’s going on, just enjoy the vibes. There’s a lot of wolves, strawberry jam and eccentric characters – a good combination for a graphic novel if you ask me.

I loved Brand-o, who is a TV for some reason, needing to look in a mirror to watch the news. It’s even funnier when they meet the news reporter they love but they called her the wrong name as they’ve only ever seen it mirrored. It’s such a small detail but it’s absolutely hilarious.

The art style is simplistic in a way that feels comforting and I loved the hot pink colour palette. Having a pink colour palette is almost a sure-fire way to get me to check out a graphic novel.

I had fun reading Jake Spooky And the Wolves Within Him and it’s definitely a graphic novel anyone can enjoy. I’m assuming it’s aimed at children, but the humour will translate well for any age. Well, unless you’re a bit boring and take everything too seriously.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
