Graphic Novel Review: Descender Vol. 1 by Jeff Lemire & Dustin Nguyen

Synopsis:

Young Robot boy TIM-21 and his companions struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. Written by award-winning creator, Jeff Lemire, Descender is a rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey. Lemire pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling epic.

Review:

Descender has made me do something Iโ€™ve only ever done once before: DNF a graphic novel. The second I opened this graphic novel I was surprised by the art style and not in a good way. While I liked how colourful it was, the lack of outlines made everything blur into one big mess. Some people may really like this style but itโ€™s not for me. The action was hard to follow with no clear direction or movement. Again, it felt like a blur.

I gave this a few chapters before deciding that the story just wasnโ€™t capturing my attention. Iโ€™ve only tried a few Sci-Fi graphic novels but Iโ€™m starting to realise that theyโ€™re not for me as I didnโ€™t enjoy any of them. Iโ€™m a fairly big fan of the genre in the general but for some reason I find Sci-Fi graphic novels really boring. Is that too harsh to say? Maybe.

I donโ€™t have anything against anyone that worked on this graphic novel. It just wasnโ€™t to my taste and thatโ€™s perfectly OK. I wouldnโ€™t say Iโ€™d read enough of the story to really comment on it, but the parts I did read were really quite slow and the worldbuilding felt lacklustre.

To get a better grasp on whether or not I was alone with my thoughts on Descender volume one, I checked out the Goodreads reviews and it seems like quite a few people have also DNFโ€™d this or rated it pretty lowly.

If youโ€™re a huge Sci-Fi fan, youโ€™ll probably love Descender, but I personally think the pace is way too slow for a graphic novel.
