Graphic Novel Review: Descender Vol. 1 by Jeff Lemire & Dustin Nguyen

Synopsis:

Young Robot boy TIM-21 and his companions struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. Written by award-winning creator, Jeff Lemire, Descender is a rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey. Lemire pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling epic.

Review:

Descender has made me do something I’ve only ever done once before: DNF a graphic novel. The second I opened this graphic novel I was surprised by the art style and not in a good way. While I liked how colourful it was, the lack of outlines made everything blur into one big mess. Some people may really like this style but it’s not for me. The action was hard to follow with no clear direction or movement. Again, it felt like a blur.

I gave this a few chapters before deciding that the story just wasn’t capturing my attention. I’ve only tried a few Sci-Fi graphic novels but I’m starting to realise that they’re not for me as I didn’t enjoy any of them. I’m a fairly big fan of the genre in the general but for some reason I find Sci-Fi graphic novels really boring. Is that too harsh to say? Maybe.

I don’t have anything against anyone that worked on this graphic novel. It just wasn’t to my taste and that’s perfectly OK. I wouldn’t say I’d read enough of the story to really comment on it, but the parts I did read were really quite slow and the worldbuilding felt lacklustre.

To get a better grasp on whether or not I was alone with my thoughts on Descender volume one, I checked out the Goodreads reviews and it seems like quite a few people have also DNF’d this or rated it pretty lowly.

If you’re a huge Sci-Fi fan, you’ll probably love Descender, but I personally think the pace is way too slow for a graphic novel.
