The Best Of: Kindle Unlimited & Prime Reading #11

It’s been a few months since I’ve had a Kindle Unlimited subscription and I’m itching to check it out again. Surprisingly, I have been using Prime Reading more, which is something I forget I have access to. But it is something I use from time to time, hence why it’s included in the title of these posts. This month’s books are all available through Kindle Unlimited.

A Trial of Sorcerers by Elise Kova

We all know by now just how much I love this series. I couldn’t believe my luck when I got selected to receive an early copy. Elise Kova is one of my favourite authors and I’m yet to rate any of her books less than four stars. So far, all of the books in this series have been either a 4.5 or 5/5. It’s just so good. I can’t recommend them enough.

Synopsis: Ice is in her blood.

Eighteen-year-old Waterrunner Eira Landan lives her life in the shadows — the shadow of her older brother, of her magic’s whispers, and of the person she accidentally killed. She’s the most unwanted apprentice in the Tower of Sorcerers until the day she decides to step out and compete for a spot in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms.

Pitted against the best sorcerers in the Empire, Eira fights to be one of four champions. Excelling in the trials has its rewards. She’s invited to the royal court with the “Prince of the Tower,” discovers her rare talent for forbidden magic, and at midnight, Eira meets with a handsome elfin ambassador.

But, Eira soon learns, no reward is without risk. As she comes into the spotlight, so too do the skeletons of a past she hadn’t even realised was haunting her.

Eira went into the trials ready for a fight. Ready to win. She wasn’t ready for what it would cost her. No one expected the candidates might not make it out with their lives.

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

I feel like I’ve talked about this book a lot lately which is weird because I read it so long ago.

If you’re into vikings, especially badass female vikings, you will love Sky in the Deep–Eelyn is about as cool as they come.

This book has tons of brutal action and even includes a small romance subplot, so I feel like it caters to all. Maybe? Brutal action and romance don’t often go well together, but I liked it here. Learning about the culture and traditions was also fun.

Synopsis: Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbour is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.

She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.
