Synopsis:
Generations have passed since the original Heroes of Baldur’s Gate saved the city and the Realms. Now a new threat rises and an unlikely group of misfits are thrust into adventure with Minsc, the legendary Ranger do-gooder with a heart of gold, brain of lead, and hamster of pronounced wisdom.
Review:
I’ll be honest and say I picked up Legends of Baldur’s Gate because of the cover, well also because of the popularity of the latest Baldur’s Gate game. I haven’t played the game myself, but I have seen clips and I’m definitely intrigued.
I sometimes find fantasy graphic novels to be quite hit or miss, but I loved this one. The actual story was interesting and had a very good pace. Often fantasy graphic novels spend so much time on world-building that there isn’t time for the story, but they’re very well interwoven here.
I will say I was a little confused at times, but I’m not clued up on the Baldur’s Gate lore in the slightest. If you’ve played the games and read the graphic novels, please let me know if they are even slightly similar (world-wise, I’m assuming the characters are completely different).
The art style was so cool and had so many intricacies. I’m not usually a fan of this type of style but it works so well for this story. The character designs in particular were great. I think if Legends of Baldur’s Gate wasn’t in full colour, I would have a very different opinion, but the palette was stunning.
I’m pretty sure there are more volumes with these characters, but I don’t know what order they are in or if they follow a chronological timeline. But I will probably check them out at some point.
