The Best Of: Graphic Novel Covers #16

Devil on Her Shoulder by Cédric Mayen & Sandra Cardona

This graphic novel is a rare case of having the same art style on the cover and inside. It’s seriously stunning throughout. I basically spent my entire review talking about how much I loved the art style and character designs.

Devil on Her Shoulder has the type of cover that would make me instantly buy it without reading anything about it. I’d definitely spot this across a bookshop, gasp and run towards it. I’m such a sucker for a pretty cover, shallow I know, but it makes sense for graphic novels. Right?

Synopsis: Hell and damnation! The Bruja is missing! When the most powerful witch alive disappears without a trace, Norah, her 17-year-old niece, decides to investigate. But upon entering her aunt’s manor, she interrupts a summoning ritual and finds herself face to face with the devil… Or half of him, anyway, as he has been cut in two and is now stuck in a pentagram. Unable to return to Hell without Norah’s help, Lucifer agrees to assist her in finding the Bruja—a devilish task when you’re the most feared and hated being on the planet!

Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Volume I by Matthew Colville & Olivia Samson

The art style on this cover is one of my favourite character designs for Vox Machina – I do wish Vex and Vax had slightly darker skin though, but this would have been released before the show and the choice to make their skin tones darker. Saying that though, this version of Vex is gorgeous, as is Keyleth. It’s definitely my favourite Keyleth design.

This has actually become my second favourite cover of this series now. Volume four has taken the title of the best cover in this series, but I’ll talk about that one in a future post. I don’t have a photo of it just yet as my camera has just started working again.

Anyway, this cover fully embodies what you’d expect to see from a fantasy adventure. It practically screams ‘Dungeons & Dragons’. Which is great, does what it says on the tin.

Synopsis: From the creators of the hit show “Critical Role” comes Vox Machina’s origin story! Writers Matthew Mercer and Matthew Colville team with artist extraordinaire Olivia Samson and colorist Chris Northrop to bring you the story of where the heroes’ journey began.

The band of adventurers known as Vox Machina will save the world. Eventually. But even they have to start somewhere.

Six would-be heroes on seemingly different jobs find their paths intertwined as they investigate shady business in the swamp town of Stilben. They’ll need to put their heads– and weapons–together to figure out what’s going on…and keep from being killed in the process. Even then, whether or not they can overcome what truly lurks at the bottom of the town’s travails remains to be seen!
