Book Review: As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson

Synopsis:

Pip is about to head to college, but she is still haunted by the way her last investigation ended. Sheโ€™s used to online death threats in the wake of her viral true-crime podcast, but she canโ€™t help noticing an anonymous person who keeps asking her: Who will look for you when youโ€™re the one who disappears?

Soon the threats escalate and Pip realises that someone is following her in real life. When she starts to find connections between her stalker and a local serial killer caught six years ago, she wonders if maybe the wrong man is behind bars.

Police refuse to act, so Pip has only one choice: find the suspect herselfโ€”or be the next victim. As the deadly game plays out, Pip discovers that everything in her small town is coming full circle… and if she doesnโ€™t find the answers, this time she will be the one who disappears…

Review:

I loved every second of this series, so much so that I really donโ€™t know what to say about the final book. As Good As Dead was probably my least favourite of the series but itโ€™s still a five-star read. I think the reason why I didnโ€™t like it as much was because the format of this instalment wasnโ€™t like the previous two. The interview transcripts and investigation diaries were some of my favourite parts.

Saying this though, this book is still incredible. What a debut series. You really could never guess where the story was going to go, I especially did not expect the huge twist of this book. It was so intense yet incredibly interesting to read. I really feel like I learnt something from this series and I never expected to say that about a YA mystery thriller. Holly Jackson has quite firmly made her way into my top 5 authors.

The subtle changes in Pip over the previous two books really come to light in As Good As Dead and honestly, Iโ€™m here for it. Thereโ€™s a specific line from the latter half of the book, that if youโ€™ve read this youโ€™ll know which one Iโ€™m talking about, that took me completely by surprise, but also hell yeah Pip. I love when characters explore their darker side and Pip definitely did that in this installment.

I canโ€™t talk about this book and not mention Ravi. The absolute light of my life. Will he be taking a top spot in my favourite book boys list? Potentially. Heโ€™d do literally anything for Pip and he really proves that in As Good As Dead. I donโ€™t think youโ€™d ever meet anyone as loyal as Ravi. Heโ€™s the best.

The absolute sadness I felt when I got to the end of this book was immense. Iโ€™m so sad itโ€™s over and I need more Pip and Ravi in my life. The last page legit almost made me cry and I never cry at books.

I have nothing but love for this entire series and I will continue to sing its praise for the rest of time. Iโ€™m now going to (impatiently) wait for the adaptation to come out just so I can have more of it in my life.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
