Book Review: Combustible Magic by Iris Beaglehole

Synopsis:

As the festival of Beltane draws near, mysterious fires are springing up around the magical village of Myrtlewood, and Rosemary Thorn can’t help but try to solve the case.

Rosemary already has too much on her plate with a hoard of foundling children to house and her own teenager to raise. On top of all this, she has run out of excuses. There’s nothing standing between Rosemary and her dream of becoming a magical chocolatier. Well, nothing except her own self-sabotage.

Meanwhile, Athena Thorn is yearning for the fae realm and harbouring a secret that could put the whole town at risk, and the last thing she wants to do is tell her mother!

Review:

I’m really enjoying this series so far. Which I’m pretty sure I said at the start of the last review, but it’s true. I wouldn’t say it’s the best I’ve ever read, but it’s fun, doesn’t take itself too seriously and I love the cosy vibes. I’m definitely starting to become more of a fan of cosy mysteries.

My biggest issue with the previous book was Athena’s attitude and generally all over the place personality. Well, that was much better in Combustible Magic and it seems like she’s starting to find her place in Mytrlewood – even if she is keeping secrets still.

The banter between Rosemary and Athena was back on top form and I especially liked their training scenes. It’s great to see them both getting to grips with their magic and it’s refreshing that they aren’t both instantly pros and overpowered.

Unfortunately, we had no progress with any of Rosemary’s romantic relationships. I’m personally rooting for Burk, probably because he was the first one we met, but he wasn’t really in Combustible Magic. I understand Rosemary not wanting a relationship because she doesn’t need a man, but I feel like cosy mysteries need at least some romance, right?

Combustible Magic has been my favourite of the series so far. There was a good mix between silly and serious. It also feels like the tension of the story is starting to ramp up and the next instalments will feature some really cool, high-powered magic.

I’m 100% going to continue reading this series in the future. Sadly, my Kindle Unlimited subscription runs out in a couple of weeks and I have no desire to keep it going right now. Mostly because I’ve had it for six months now and I’ve been neglecting the books I’ve actually brought. The next book in this series will be one of my first reads when I do get it again unless I find some time to read it in the next two weeks.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
