Synopsis:
My arrogant fake fiancé? I can’t stand him.
Cocky and charismatic Emmett Rhodes isn’t the relationship kind of guy, but now that he’s running for mayor of our small town, his bachelor past is hurting the campaign.
Thankfully, I’m the last woman who would ever fall for him.
We’re total opposites—he’s a golden retriever and I’m sharp and snarky, but he’ll cosign on my restaurant loan if I play his devoted fiancée. Between romantic dates, a prom night re-do, and visits to a secret beach, things heat up, and the line between real and ruse is lit on fire. I see another side of Mr. Popular, and now I wonder if I was all wrong.
We can’t keep our hands off each other, but it’s all for show… right?
Review:
I went into That Kind of Guy not expecting much as I will admit, I judge romances far more harshly. However, I was pleasantly surprised.
I love a fake dating book, especially one in a small town. I feel like getting away with a fake relationship is much more difficult when it’s a close-knit community. The antic’s Avery and Emmett get up to are pretty wild, did someone say turtle sanctuary?
I really liked the characters, even though Emmett was supposed to be seen as arrogant and unlikable, his chapters showed his true personality and it was hard not to like him. Well, some people might not like him, but he had really good intentions with his plot to become mayor and I think that’s commendable.
Watching Avery and Emmett go from not liking each other, to friends, to lovers, to being madly in love was very sweet. Even if the shift did happen very fast. Getting married to really hammer home the fake relationship is wild though. Sorry, that’s a slight spoiler, but the synopsis does start by referring to Emmett as Avery’s fiancé.
That Kind of Guy was also a very quick read, which gives it extra points. It was one of my last reads of 2023 and it was a decent way to end the year. I’ll probably check out the next book (they are a series of standalones I think), which is about Avery’s friend Hannah and Emmett’s brother Wyatt. I’m definitely interested to see what their dynamic will be like.
