What I Watched: October 2023

For once, I actually have too many things to talk about. It was my birthday in October, but guess what? I was sick. Yep, I had a stinking cold on my birthday and spent the entire weekend rotting in bed watching films. Because of this, I’ll just choose the best ones to talk about as I’ll literally be here all day otherwise.

Films

Every single Lilo and Stitch film

I’m not even joking when I say I watched every single Lilo and Stitch film. They are my comfort films and I never admitted this on the internet before, but I love Stitch and Angel they are my absolute faves. I squeal with happiness when you see Angel for 5 seconds in Leroy and Stich.

After watching all of the films, I am seriously contemplating watching the series. I loved it as a kid and haven’t seen it in a very long time. Is this weird? Probably, but I don’t really care.

Synopsis: Stitch, an extraterrestrial entity, heads straight to planet Earth after he escapes his prison, where he tries to impersonate a dog. Things take a turn when Lilo adopts him from an animal shelter.

Return to Halloweentown

Weirdly, Disney is live streaming all four Halloweentown films on YouTube and I watched this one whilst getting ready to go shopping on my birthday. Which I know, you’re thinking ‘you said you were sick on your birthday why were you putting on makeup and going shopping?’. Well, this was the first day I didn’t feel like literal death so I went on a (slow) shopping trip on my own.

Anyway, back to the film. This one is probably tied with Halloweentwon High as my favourite in the series, controversial, I know. I love the aesthetic of this film as the majority of it takes place in Halloweentown. I do hate that they replaced Marnie though. Also, why is Lucas Grabeel insanely attractive in this film?

Synopsis: When Marnie takes admission to the Witch University of Halloweentown, she soon finds out that the wizards and witches are not allowed to use magic in the school.

TV shows

Sex Education season four

I can’t actually remember if I watched Sex Education this month or last month, but I haven’t talked about it yet, so I’m including it anywhere.

I love this show so much that I literally watch ten more seasons of them doing just about anything. They’re some of my all-time favourite TV characters and my boyfriend and I realised I am literally Aimee.

However, this was by far the worst season. I loved how inclusive the season was, but a lot of it felt very preachy and it lost its ability to intricately weave social issues into the plot. It more was “this is a problem that needs a solution” rather than an artful plotline that made you feel something. Was it just me that felt like this?

Synopsis: Socially awkward high school student Otis may not have much experience in the lovemaking department, but he gets good guidance on the topic in his personal sex ed course — living with mom Jean, who is a sex therapist. Being surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis has become a reluctant expert on the subject. When his classmates learn about his home life, Otis decides to use his insider knowledge to improve his status at school, so he teams with whip-smart bad girl Maeve to set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their classmates’ problems. But through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realizes that he may need some therapy of his own.

Good Omens season two

I already want to re-watch this season, I enjoyed it so much more than the first. My boyfriend and I binged the season over two nights and we both really liked it. The vibes of this season were immaculate and I need more David Tennant in my life.

Synopsis: Good Omens 2 explores storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the ineffable friendship between Aziraphale, a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley. Having been on Earth since The Beginning, and with the Apocalypse thwarted, the duo are getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho.

Broadchurch season one and two

I’m aware of how late I am to the party with this one, but I needed more David Tennant in my life and I’d heard such good things about this series. Also, it’s probably the only serious thing I’ve watched this month.

My boyfriend and I got so into the show we watched the entire second season in one day. It was very intense, as it’s not an easy watch, but it’s so good. We’re about halfway through season three and oh boy.

Synopsis: When the corpse of an 11-year-old British boy, Danny Latimer, is found bloodied and dirty on an idyllic beach, a small Dorset community becomes the focus of a police investigation and media madness. Out-of-town Detective Inspector Alec Hardy gets the point position over Detective Sgt. Ellie Miller — who feels the job should have been hers. Now she must engage in an efficient working relationship with taciturn Hardy. Slowly, more members of the community of Broadchurch are drawn into the investigation, with a telephone engineer drawing great attention when he admits to a special connection to the case. While dealing with so much unwelcome attention, Danny’s family tries to cope with its grief. When a suspect is named and charged, the ensuing trial sees the defendant promising to expose more of the townspeople’s secrets.
